A Message from the Family of Susee Mable

“Where shall we see a better daughter, or a kinder sister, or a truer friend?”― Jane Austen
Darling Daughter, Beloved Wife, Loving Mother

On April 13, 2015 our beloved Susee Mable passed away after a long battle with Parkinson's disease and a brain tumor. Loving mother to Anil and Suhasini, dedicated wife to Pamula Daniel Anandaraju and darling daughter (Chanty) of the late Pastor M. Benjamin and Victoriamma, Susee was the light of our life—our everything. She exemplified unconditional love, compassion and forgiveness and manifested an eternal joie de vivre and dignity despite the trials she endured. Susee was a midwife and nurse in Andhra Pradesh, India and Toronto, Canada for 35 years—providing hospital and nursing home patients the same kind of comfort and care she gave us at home. The majority of her career in Canada was dedicated to neonatal nursing.

From the start, Susee was a spiritual being who loved to pray, meditate, read, write and sing. As a child, Susee M. Benjamin (as she was then known) could be seen praying under trees and carrying her bible everywhere she went. A pastor's daughter, she was raised in the Adventist faith. A philosopher at heart, she respected every religion and belief system. Always kind, she found inspiration and joy in everything and everyone. A truly jolly spirit. Susee was an exceptional cook and crocheter who loved to laugh—her smile could light up any room. She was an ardent supporter of the Blue Jays and Leafs and was also a puzzles/game show enthusiast. Susee was a profound advocate of social justice and human rights movements and inspired by the vision and politics of Pierre Trudeau, supported the Liberal Party of Canada for over four decades.

In the 90s she discovered the internet and email and in 2004 she continued her online explorations by starting this blog: "Silent Meditations". It was a place where she wrote freely and happily about her beliefs and experiences as a Christian and an open-minded spiritual being. Writing poetry, personal musings and collecting quotations was a habit she engaged in since childhood. Our home is filled with handwritten notebooks of her reflections. Our family will continue to post tributes and some of her writings posthumously, in loving memory.

Susee was truly a lovely soul and it's our sincere pleasure to share with those who knew her and those who did not have the chance to meet her, her thoughts and beliefs—in her own words.

"My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. Continue to allow humor to lighten the burden of your tender heart."—Maya Angelou

The Woman Who Raised Me

Susee in Chilukuru, Andhra Pradesh (1981) I had the most pure, loving and beautiful mother. She was my best friend, my shining light, my first love, my baby girl and my hero. Mummy was filled with kindness, laughter, prayer and goodness. She was as fun-loving as she was solemn and wise. She gave everything to my family: kept us healthy, safe, confident and happy. I’ve always appreciated my mother for all these qualities and for so much more. But to lose her prematurely to devastating illnesses forced me into deeper reflection. I’m surprised that such a courageous and loving person ever existed and that she was my mother. She was selflessness and unconditional love personified. From the baby girl born in Narendrapuram to the woman she grew into: Mum always knew who she was. She was unwavering in her faith, lived as humbly as she did honourably and saw the best in everyone. Bullies may have tormented her but she never bowed down to them. She had the courage to face them, f...

The Soul

I'd like to share some of my views and thoughts about the “soul” based on my understanding from my life's experiences. What Is The Soul? Many times I wonder where I came from and what the reason is for my being here on earth. But the answer seems to be with in me, it’s in that element in all of us, which is invisible and unexplainable: the soul. I believe that I am a soul and have a body and that I also have God's spirit within me. When God created humans (Adam in the Biblical sense) God formed them in His own figure (which is holy and transparent). When God gave Adam the breath of life, He gave His spirit to everyone on the earth. I strongly believe that the physical body is lower to the soul because when Adam and Eve disobeyed God's word, they were given physical garments. So how the physical body is a cover to the soul, similarly the soul is a cover to the spirit. So I do believe that humans are three fold beings. The soul is the core of the divine spirit, which God ...

“Trust. Let go. Enjoy the ride”

Circa 1979, Berrien Springs, Michigan     “Trust. Let go. Enjoy the ride” In the days following her passing I dreamed of mom repeatedly. Most of the dreams were of her miraculous return home, where our family would care for her until she was fully healed,—the joy shattered by waking into reality. These dreams haunted me for months, the narratives changing slightly each time adding to my pain and anxiety. The following November, I dreamed that I was in a bookstore in the early evening, the darkness had settled in as I searched for something to pique my curiosity. I was about to pick up a book when I noticed a large window peering out toward a busy intersection. A woman had walked up to cross the street carrying packages of Christmas gifts. When she turned I caught a glimpse of her unmistakable profile. It was mom as she had been when I was five, wearing that dark green winter coat, the coat I would look for as she’d pick me up from kindergarten. I called out “mom” and she turne...
